How to Choose a Roofing Contractor in Western Washington

Western Washington rain, moss, trees, and short dry-weather windows make roofing scope and project management just as important as the material you select.

Start With the Inspection, Not the Sales Pitch

A strong roofing proposal should connect each recommendation to an observed condition. Ask the contractor to identify leak paths, flashing concerns, ventilation, soft decking, drainage, moss damage, and the age of existing layers. Photos can help you understand areas that are difficult to see safely. Be cautious when a recommendation changes dramatically without new evidence or when the contractor will not explain the scope. The goal is not to find the longest proposal; it is to find a clear, defensible plan for keeping water out of the home.

Compare Weather and Water-Management Details

Rain planning matters. Ask how exposed decking will be protected, how much roof will be opened at once, and what happens if weather changes. Review underlayment, valley treatment, wall and chimney flashing, pipe penetrations, drip edge, gutters, and attic ventilation. Homes under heavy tree cover may also need a maintenance plan for debris and moss. Contractors may recommend different materials, but each should explain how the assembly manages water and ventilation. Those details often matter more than a small difference in shingle branding.

Verify Business Details and Written Terms

Before signing, independently review the contractor's current registration, insurance information, references, and warranty terms. Ask who will supervise the crew, whether subcontractors are used, how property protection and cleanup work, and how unexpected deck repairs are priced. The payment schedule should align with clear milestones rather than relying on a large unexplained upfront payment. Read cancellation, change-order, dispute, and warranty language. Keep the signed contract, photos, product information, and payment records together in case questions arise later.
